What is your name in Chinese

Do you know how to say what is your name in Chinese and how do you answer my name is in Chinese. In this lesson, you will learn about the ways to introduce yourself in Chinese.

A Chinese name consists of a last name and a first name. The last name precedes the first name. One-character last name is very common, and two-character last name is very rare. The first name usually has one or two characters. Sometimes you only want to know someone’s last name, so the answer should be the last name only. If you want to know someone’s full name, then the answer should be the name in full

您贵姓?
Nín guìxìng?
What’s your last name?

我姓张。
Wǒ xìng zhāng
My last name is Zhang

“您贵姓? Nín guìxìng?” is a polite way of asking someone’s last name. The common expression is “你姓什么?Nǐ xìng shénme?” The answer to it should be just the last name, and mentioning the first name is unncccessary

您叫什么名字?
Nín jiào shénme míngzì?
What’s your first name?

“名字” has two meanings: the first name without the last name and the full name. You can either answer with your full name or just your first name. You're most likely to introduce yourself in Chinese with your full name, especially in formal situations

我叫李小龙
wǒ jiào Lǐ Xiǎolóng
My name is Bruce Lee

我叫玛丽。
Wǒ jiào mǎlì.
My first name is Mary.
